FATY LY

Faty Ly, is a ceramic designer and ceramicist with more than 20 years of expertise in craft and design. Faty draws all her creativity from local influences for a global resonance. Faty's vision is to revisit graphic forms, textures and shapes to bring an authentic imprint to ceramics with a striking or refined aesthetic. Faty Ly uses strong visual accents on tableware to tell the contemporary story of an African heritage. Faty Ly uses slabs and coils to hand build pieces. Pressed, textured coils are applied to the pots’ surface to mimic traditional woven fabrics or hair strands. The whole making process can take up to a couple of weeks, depending on the making of textured coils but also on the drying time that can be critical.  Faty Ly tries as much as possible to respond to the potentialities of the local clay revealed through the testing processes and the new finish she is exploring.

In 2015, she launched her brand Fatyly in Senegal, the business is specialized in tableware and giftware. The brand contributes to preserving African cultures as a heritage to anchor them in the collective memory.

Faty Ly graduated from Central Saint Martins of London and also holds an MA in Design Management.
